Back-to-School in a Green Way

Parents and kids are starting to wander around stores with lists and glazed eyes, yes, back-to-school is in the air. As a parents, there are days I look forward to BTS, but being a student myself, I also dread it.

The down side of BTS is the cost and the long list of less than eco-friendly supply requirements. Each year I struggle to find green products to replace the vinyl laden, plastic filled things. I have some suggestions to green that list. I also have a few websites that may help you if you can’t find green substitutes for the traditional requirements in your town.

1. Recycled paper instead of virgin-sourced paper. Try to get as close to 100 percent recycled, post-consumer paper as you can in notebooks, folders, loose leaf paper and printer paper.

2. Seek out recycled content plastic products in scissors, rulers, pencil boxes, and binders.

3. Mine your old junk drawers for items that can be reused, like last year’s scissors and ruler.

4. Try to find crayons made with beeswax or soy instead of petroleum.

5. Look for pens, markers and highlighters made from recycled plastic.

6. There are pencils made from old denim, recycled newspaper and FSC-certified wood products.

7. Pack a waste-free lunch.

8. Avoid nasty vinyl products like binders and cheap, nearly disposable, backpacks.

9. Invest in quality and, even better, recycled content backpacks.

10. Spread the green, waste-free message at your child’s school.

Reusable Bags Are For More Than Just Groceries

This is a reminder that you can take those wonderful reusable bags to the mall or any stores you like; liquor stores, auto parts stores, department stores, home improvement stores, discount department stores and your local stores.

That is why I especially love the Reuseit Workhorse bags.  The bag tucks into its own little pouch that can fit in you pocket or purse.  I usually have about 3 or so of these little gems tucked into my purse, and no, I do not have one of those purses the size of a piece of luggage.  Baggu, ChicoBag, Reisenthel, Flip & Tumble, Freak-O-Bags and Envirosax all have ultra compact bag options.  There are endless shapes, colors and styles to choose from.

For the trip to the liquor and/or wine store I particularly love my Reisenthel bottle bag.  I get compliments on it every time I take it to the store.  It is also nice for the smaller glass bottles of milk and cream from your local dairy.  So, remember those reusable bags for everything, not just groceries.

Ditch the Plastic Bags, Really, Do It Now

Once and for all, refuse plastic bags and take your own reusable bags with you.  I have to admit, it took me a little while to get into the habit of bringing my own bags. Reuseit’s Workhorse Bag finally got me into the reusable bag habit.  My first Workhorse was a gift from a friend, you know who you are, and it was my reusable bag solution.  It is small; I can literally shove 3 or 4 into my purse.

Besides the Reuseit Workhorse, there are dozens of quality, reusable bags on the market.  It is cost effective to spend more on a better quality bag.  The really cheap, or giveaway bags, tend to fall apart quickly.  Bags like Envirosax, Baggu, ChicoBag, Built and Reisenthel are all quality bags.  You could go one step further down the green path and make your own bags out of old clothing or fabric scraps.  More bags are waiting to be discovered online and in local stores.  Etsy is another source for upcycled and recycled bags.

So, go ahead, ditch those plastic bags.  Why not ditch those paper bags too?

Embrace Rags

With 2011 underway, I wanted to touch on some basic tips and reminders for people.  Each day this week, I will post some of the small things that we can do to be more green.

Today’s tip: Embrace rags.  Try your hardest to not use or reduce your use of paper towels.  There are fancy paper towel replacements made from eco-fibers, but hole-riddled socks and thread-bare bath towels make a cheap rag.  By reusing old, worn out items you keep them out of the landfulls (yes, I meant landfulls).

If you don’t have any old clothes or towels to use for rags, here is where you can find products to replace paper towels.

Reuseit Is Live!

One of my favorite online stores has changed from ReusableBags.com to Reuseit.com.  I am a Reuseit Ambassador, so this company has a special place in my heart.  I believe in Reuseit, and I’ve shopped there for years.  The name change occurred because they carry so much more than reusable bags now.  Reuseit has “reusables for every part of your life”.  Check out their new site and new products.  Reuseit can truly help you reduce waste in your home and life.

Greening the Summer Festival Experience

Summer is full of summer festivals.  I know our family looks forward to them, especially after a long, cold winter.  How can we make our summer festival experience a more sustainable affair?  I have a short list of some simple things we can all do.

1) Bring those reusable bags.  They are great for the special arts and crafts that vendors sell at these events.  What’s great about those special finds is they are typically produced by local artists and artisans.  I like my ACME Bags from Reuseit, but I also like a backpack style bag that frees up my hands, and saves my one shoulder from all the carrying.  I found that Chico makes a great day pack out of recycled fiber.  I bought mine at a local store called Mother Nature’s Food, but you can also find the day packs at ChicoBag.

2) Remember those reusable water bottles.  Again, many bottles are available from Reuseit.  One that is great for lugging all day is the Platypus which collapses when it’s empty.  Carrying your bottles when you’re done is another reason for your reusable bags.  I have also found many bottles at local stores.  I  bought a beautiful handcrafted wood mug at a Renaissance Festival years ago.  I take that along for my water and my mead.

3) Take along a reusable straw and silverware.  So often when we are at temporary outdoor events everything is disposable.  To reduce your festival footprint take your own utensils in your reusable bag.  You can dig through some old camping equipment for it or hit Reuseit again for their varied travel silverware.  They have a bamboo set with chopsticks in a carrying pouch.  They also have a new type of spork made of plastic or titanium.  My daughter’s favorite item is her glass reusable straw by Dharma, but if you’re nervous about a glass straw there is a stainless steel one at Reuseit as well.

4) How about a reusable towel like People Towels or the Skoy?  You could bring some old cloth napkins from home too. That way you won’t need to use paper towels or napkins.

5) Finally, make sure you recycle, if you do wind up using a disposable water bottle or aluminum can.  If the festival doesn’t have recycling then take your recycling with you.

Aladdin – Mini Lunchbox

Found these nice little boxes for lunch and storage.  They seem like a nice option if you need a divided lunch and something that can be microwaved.  The Aladdin lunchbox is BPA-free and a food safe plastic.  They will be lighter then Pyrex and perfect for things that don’t do well in a bag like goulash or some other hot dish.
