Are you looking for a more stylish and sustainable way to carry your lunch?  Stop brown-bagging it and start stylish-bagging it.  There is quite a large selection of fashionable and insulated lunch bags in a variety of materials and styles.  Some of these bags are more eco-friendly in their production, but they are all an improvement over a bag that is thrown away each day.  A reusable bag also encourages other reusables in your lunch such as:  cloth napkins, real or travel silverware,  reusable straws, and reusable food containers.  You can be the chicest of the chic with your new fashionable lunch bag while also being green.

Reduce Your Plastic Use

There are companies that can help you use less plastic in your daily life than you are currently using.  There are the obvious places to ditch the plastic like switching from disposable plastic bags to quality reusable bags.  Switching from disposable plastic water bottles to reusable water bottles in glass, stainless steel, aluminum or food-safe and BPA-free plastics (my personal favorite is stainless).  If you don’t have perfect water, there are water purifiers on the market that can make almost any water potable.  Now, here’s where it gets interesting; how do you get plastic out of those daily mundane chores.  Believe it or not people used to clean without plastic.  A company in Germany is making things like toilet and dish brushes without plastic.  I have found an Internet company called Life Without Plastic that carries these brushes, plus stainless steel ice-cube trays, stainless steel drink ware and tableware, plastic-free toys, even a plastic-free fly swatter.  Then there are the places outside your home where using a reusable instead of disposable plastic.  Getting into this habit is hard, but oh-so-worthwhile.  Our family loves Dharma Glass Straws and Endurance Stainless Steel Straws.  My new favorite to replace a disposable is the Sanctus Mundo Airtight Watertight Takeout Containers.  These containers range in size from 3″ diameter to 6.25″ diameter.

Look around your life.  Every time you are about to buy another plastic thing, consider if you could find that product in a plastic-free form.  You might be surprised.  These items will most likely cost more initially, but they will probably last longer.  At the end of their useful life, these products are recyclable or biodegradable.

This is a short list of resources, I could go on and on, challenge yourself to do so.

Happy Independence Day!

Happy 4th of July! I hope you are having a great holiday, and doing your best to keep it green. I know it can be hard around holidays, but little changes add up to a big difference. If you do fall off the green wagon today, just work a bit harder tomorrow or the next holiday. Some easy ideas are organic berries, local food and reusables. Today is also a good day to think about energy independence: liberty from polluting fossil fuels, and liberty from foreign sources of energy. Let’s take this Independence Day to heart.

Greening the Summer Festival Experience

Summer is full of summer festivals.  I know our family looks forward to them, especially after a long, cold winter.  How can we make our summer festival experience a more sustainable affair?  I have a short list of some simple things we can all do.

1) Bring those reusable bags.  They are great for the special arts and crafts that vendors sell at these events.  What’s great about those special finds is they are typically produced by local artists and artisans.  I like my ACME Bags from Reuseit, but I also like a backpack style bag that frees up my hands, and saves my one shoulder from all the carrying.  I found that Chico makes a great day pack out of recycled fiber.  I bought mine at a local store called Mother Nature’s Food, but you can also find the day packs at ChicoBag.

2) Remember those reusable water bottles.  Again, many bottles are available from Reuseit.  One that is great for lugging all day is the Platypus which collapses when it’s empty.  Carrying your bottles when you’re done is another reason for your reusable bags.  I have also found many bottles at local stores.  I  bought a beautiful handcrafted wood mug at a Renaissance Festival years ago.  I take that along for my water and my mead.

3) Take along a reusable straw and silverware.  So often when we are at temporary outdoor events everything is disposable.  To reduce your festival footprint take your own utensils in your reusable bag.  You can dig through some old camping equipment for it or hit Reuseit again for their varied travel silverware.  They have a bamboo set with chopsticks in a carrying pouch.  They also have a new type of spork made of plastic or titanium.  My daughter’s favorite item is her glass reusable straw by Dharma, but if you’re nervous about a glass straw there is a stainless steel one at Reuseit as well.

4) How about a reusable towel like People Towels or the Skoy?  You could bring some old cloth napkins from home too. That way you won’t need to use paper towels or napkins.

5) Finally, make sure you recycle, if you do wind up using a disposable water bottle or aluminum can.  If the festival doesn’t have recycling then take your recycling with you.

A Greener Father's Day

Sometimes dads are hard to buy for, especially when going greener in our gift giving.  I’ve listed sources for some green gifts.  In the list is everything from recycled content tennis bags from Wilson Sports to gourmet, organic coffee from Eco Express.  For the sporting dad there are eco-friendly options like the tennis bag I already mentioned, recycled content golf balls by Dixon, biodegradable golf tees by ECO Golf, eco-friendly bikes by Trek, sustainably produced surf boards by Ocean Green, recycled content kayaks by Walden Sports, and green running shoes by Brooks.

For the dad that is not into sports, Eco Express has items like organic, gourmet coffee, wine and chocolate. They also carry solar bags.  Reuseit has a men’s eco-gifts section with includes reusable bags that even the coolest dad won’t mind carrying, and reusable bottles and travel coffee mugs.  For the dad that loves to garden, what about a cordless electric mower?   You could go one step better, and get an old-fashioned reel mower, and offer to do the mowing for a month.

Other ideas for dad that have a tiny footprint would be a day of R & R, a massage for those sore muscles, or a coupon book made by the kids.  There are many more ideas like the ones I’ve listed.  Think creatively and outside the “box”.  Sometimes the best gifts are the simple ones.  Take what your dad likes and think about how to green that gift idea.

Keeping the Holiday Green

There are some simple things you can do to keep waste out of your Memorial Holiday weekend.  I know, it’s so easy to grab the cheap package of paper plates, plastic cups, plastic silverware, and paper napkins.  Resist the urge this year.  There are inexpensive and reusable products that are picnic and camping friendly.  Pick up some melamine plates and bowls.  I know, I rarely recommend plastic, but from the research I’ve done it seems melamine is benign when it’s used for plates and such.  It is not the same as the melamine found in poisonings in China and pet food.  You can find really cute patterns all over the place.  These dishes will last for years.  Glasses, I admit, are trickier.  I used to love my polycarbonate glasses on the patio.  If you really will be in your own backyard, then you can use your regular glassware.  But if you’re going elsewhere, that is harder.  I’ve seen some very cute stainless steel colored drinkware, like the aluminum stuff from the 60′s.  You could also pull out the good ol’ reusable water bottle.  You can also find melamine drinkware too.  For eating utensils there are some wicked cool new sporks.  These new sporks are a vast improvement to the old version. I have also used bamboo travel sets that have chopsticks, spoon, fork and knife  (the knife is not terribly functional).  You probably don’t want to drag out the good, holiday linen napkins to go camping.  It’s time to invest in some inexpensive cloth napkins or make your own.  Old sheets, tablecloths, or fabric remnants can be made into napkins, and you’ll have them forever.

If you feel you absolutely have to have some disposable, opt for eco-versions.  Look for recycled content or non-petroleum plastics.  You can even find compostable plastics. Locally, in Eau Claire,  I know Hahn’s Market carries some of these plates and cups.  I’m sure some other stores do as well.  Let your fingers do the walking to find out.  Below is a list of links for resources.  Have a great Memorial Day weekend.  Let’s remember to honor those that have given their lives for our freedom.

Aladdin – Mini Lunchbox

Found these nice little boxes for lunch and storage.  They seem like a nice option if you need a divided lunch and something that can be microwaved.  The Aladdin lunchbox is BPA-free and a food safe plastic.  They will be lighter then Pyrex and perfect for things that don’t do well in a bag like goulash or some other hot dish.
